Sinaia (Romanian pronunciation: [si?naja]; population: 14,636) is a town and a mountain resort in Prahova County, Romania. The town was named after Sinaia Monastery, around which it was built; the monastery in turn is named after the Biblical Mount Sinai. King Carol I of Romania built his summer home, Peles, Castle, near the town.
Sinaia is about 60 km northwest of Ploies,ti and 50 km south of Bras,ov, in a mountainous area on the Prahova River valley, just east of the Bucegi Mountains. The altitude varies between 767 m and 860 m.
The city is a popular destination for hiking and winter sports, especially downhill skiing. Among the tourist landmarks, the most important are Peles, Castle, Pelis,or Castle, Sinaia Monastery, Sinaia Casino, Sinaia train station, and the Franz Joseph and Saint Anne Cliffs. Sinaia was also the summer residence of the Romanian composer George Enescu, who stayed at the Luminis, villa.
Bras,ov (Romanian pronunciation: [bra??ov] ( listen); German: Kronstadt; Hungarian: Brasso', Hungarian pronunciation: [’br???o?]; Medieval Latin: Brassovia or Corona; 1950–1960: Oras,ul Stalin) is a city in Romania and the capital of Bras,ov County.
According to the last Romanian census, from 2002, there were 284,596 people living within the city of Bras,ov, making it the 8th most populated city in Romania.
Bras,ov is located in the central part of the country, about 166 km north of Bucharest. It is surrounded by the Southern Carpathians and is part of the Transylvania region.
The city is notable for being the birthplace of the national anthem of Romania and for hosting the Golden Stag International Music Festival.
